In the last five years the people of Thwake sub-location are happy because they can access quality water at a shorter distance as compared to earlier years when they travelled long distance to access the basic commodity-water. Due to availability of water, sanitation has improved significantly and with that general improvement of health conditions of women and children who had suffered for a long period.
ActionAid International Kenya and Safaricom through Maji Na Uhai Programme has helped over 110,000 poor and marginalized people to access clean water for domestic and livestock use since 2005.
In the year 2010 Kanini Kaseo Self-help Group, a community based CBO in Katangini Location of Makueni County received assistance from Safaricom Foundation through ActionAid to construct a new water supply for the community. When operated for 20 hours per day the water supply yields 200m3 of water in a day.
Through this initiative the communities have been trained to manage water projects for sustainability. The projects are mainly arid and semi-arid areas. The projects are designed to allow communities participation in order to create sense ownership and at the same time address a basic right; access to water. The projects have given Safaricom staff a chance to participate in the foundation activities, appreciate the noble work done by the foundation and at the same time bring about a positive transformation in the rural Kenya.
The main partners in this project are Safaricom Foundation, ActionAid International Kenya, Kanini Kaseo Self Helf Group and Katingini location community.
